Clonakilty Fire Station Must Become a Priority
Issued : Wednesday 15 December, 2010
During the devastating floods of November 2009, the people of West Cork were reminded of the vital role that Emergency Services play in our communities. This was demonstrated by the men of the Fire Service in Clonakilty, who worked around the clock to halt the damage caused by rising flood waters. There selfless efforts successfully prevented serious injury and loss of life.
However, in stark contrast to the Trojan and exemplary work of these people, not only in this instance but all year round is the dilapidated and shamefully inapt Fire Station that they are expected to operate from.
Cllr. Pendlebury said, ‘This is another example of how those who give so much to our communities are neglected. This is an issue that transcends party politics and needs to be addressed immediately. The frontline emergency services are invaluable to this country.
‘I understand that remedial works to the roof of the station have been promised but this does not go far enough and is not acceptable in this day and age.
‘I call on the Government, Cork County Council and all Public Representatives to make this issue an absolute priority and to treat the firemen of Clonakilty Fire Station with the respect they are due by providing them with nothing less than they rightfully deserve - a modern facility where they can continue the great work of serving the people of West Cork.
‘Finances are understandably tight in the current economic climate but this is the type of project that rises above fiscal and bureaucratic excuse.’
