Mechanism Needed to Finish Inhabited NAMA Estates

Issued : Wednesday 2 March, 2011

The problem of unfinished inhabited housing estates under the control of now bankrupt developers or NAMA itself is slowly revealing its magnitude and consequences.

All over the country these unfinished estates are in an unacceptable limbo, suffering poor conditions and there is nowhere for residents to direct their complaints.

Local Authorities are unwilling or unable to take on the financial burden of finishing these estates. Huge investment in sewerage, road surfaces and public lighting is required. NAMA and the courts need to create a mechanism that will help release funds to finish off these estates as soon as possible. The problem will only continue to grow if it is not addressed. The developers have a responsibility here and it must not become lost amongst legal proceedings.

The new Government must honour its commitment and responsibility to the people and ensure that those who profited from these estates pay for their completion. It is a matter of great urgency and cannot be delayed.
