Waste Management, Green Bins and WEEE

Waste Management

Green Bin

Áine has received many e-mails and phone calls since the transition of the collection of the Green Bin collection from Oxigen to Greyhound. Many people don’t know what colour bin to put out on any given collection day. To obtain a peel-and-stick calendar you can telephone Greyhound at lo-call 1890342342 and select option 3. They will post you out a calendar sticker which you can put on your green bin. The service closes at 7.00 p.m. but you can leave a recording of your name and address and you will still receive the calendar sticker. If you prefer to use the web you can achieve the same result by logging on to http://www.greenbin.ie/component/calendar/  Note that by either method you can arrange to have texts sent to your mobile to remind you when to put out your green bin.

GreyBin/Brown Bin

There is no peel and stick calendar for the grey or brown bins. If in doubt about on what specific day collections are scheduled to take place on your street, you should contact Dublin City Council directly on 2221000. The grey bin and the brown bin are lifted on alternate days.

If you have internet access there is a calendar here you can print off:

Bring Centres:

There is a bring centre on Collins Avenue opposite DCU. For Green organic waste there is a €2 charge per 80 litre Bag and €16 for a skip type (thousand litre) bag. The labels must be bought in advance.

You can buy the labels at:

Mace, Glasnevin Avenue - Postpoint
Supervalu, Main St. Ballymun - Postpoint
Costcutter, 410 Collins Ave, Whitehall - Postpoint
Post Office, 408 Collins Avenue

The Grangegorman Bring Centre now only opens Mon – Thursday 9am to 4 pm and Friday 9am to 1 pm. It is closed Friday afternoons, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank holidays. This is most inconvenient as people normally get round to the chores of clearing their sheds, cutting their grass etc. at weekends. Áine supports the decision of DCC to enter into negotiations that the company that runs the Bring Centre should close on Mondays but be available all day Saturday.

Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment

Note that owing to the WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) charge you pay when buying an electrical appliance, there is NO charge for disposing of batteries, laptops, microwaves, washing machines, in fact anything with a plug on it. Very often if you buy a new appliance, the store will take your old one free of charge under the scheme.

Unfortunately neither Collins Avenue nor Grangegorman have WEEE facilities. Áine will be pressing hard to have this scheme implemented in both. Remember, when you buy an electrical appliance you are paying for the scheme

Nearest WEE Bring Centre:

Shamrock Terrace Recycling Centre
Dublin 3, North Strand Rd, Shamrock Tce, Dublin 3.
