Traffic, Transport and Parking - Croke Park

Issued : Friday 15 May, 2009

TRAFFIC & TRANSPORT

METRO NORTH

Public transport is very much on the agenda on the Northside of Dublin at present.

An Bórd Pleanála began its enquiry into Metro North on 1st April and it continued for most of its scheduled time until a decision was made to defer the public enquiry pending further environmental impact studies.  While most residents are supportive of the project there are concerns about

  • Tunnelling. That it be sufficiently deep so as not to pose any threat to subsidence and vibration in houses where it passes beneath
  • the impact on homes and disruption of businesses and communities during construction and afterwards when it is up and running

Together with Labour TDs Joe Costello and Róisín Shortall I contributed to the oral hearing about issues that have been brought to my attention in the Drumcondra/Home Farm/Glasnevin area.

LUAS

The planned line from St. Stephens Green to Broadstone and on to Broombridge is still on track. From Broadstone to Broombridge the route will be the old railway cutting which passes under the North Circular Road, New Cabra Road and Fassaugh Road bridges.  The construction work should cause minimal disruption in Phibsborough and Cabra and the end product should provide a wonderful public transport amenity for the area.

CROKE PARK

Croke Park is a huge success as a national stadium.  With success come problems for residents – parking problems. It is clear that “park and ride” facilities are the key to solving local parking problems.  I am committed to working for such facilities which will contribute to the overall public transport service. The exclusion zone needs to be extended up as far as Botanic Road and Griffith Avenue. Residents cannot continue to be prisoners in their own home, especially as the frequency of events at the stadium has increased with concerts, soccer, GAA hurling and football as well as major rugby games.
