Tolka Valley Initiative

Issued : Tuesday 2nd June 2009

The study commissioned by the Tolka Valley Initiative into the needs of older people in the area and the services available has just been published and is a valuable resource. There are nearly 4,000 people aged over 60 in Cabra - more than 2,000 are women and nearly 2,000 are men. While more than half of those surveyed felt happy and 60% content. a significant percentage felt worried, fearful and lonely. 4 out of 5 felt 'safe' to go out during the day but one in three felt unsafe to go out at night at any time. Two thirds of older people live alone, and one third live with their extended families. Health is a major issue, with 67% of those contacted having a health problem. Obviously there is a need for more public health nurses and  home help support.

However there are a wide range of services already available for older people. Many older people are unaware of them. The booklet entitled "Needs of older People in Cabra and Finglas is available free of charge from the Cabra office of the Tolka Valley initiative 27/28 Annamoe Terrace, Cabra, Phone 01-8683806 or email mary.connolly@fbc.ie

This is not an official centre for Dublin City Council, but Mary may have some leaflets and application forms for you downstairs. Sam Nolan, former chair of the Dublin Central Labour Party has played a major part in establishing what was formerly known as the Cabra/Finglas Partnership. Kudos to you Sam. Thank you.
