APPALLING TREATMENT OF SUPERMARKET SUPPLIERS - ANN PHELAN TD
Issued : Monday 25 July, 2011
From the clear evidence now being made public about the Superquinn sale fiasco, I am appalled at the shoddy ‘behind closed doors’ treatment of suppliers by that company with the added connivance of their Banks”, stated Ann Phelan TD.
Deputy Phelan said it is incredible that the antics of the small dominant group who monopolize the retail sector could construct any deal which included a deliberate method of not paying for supplies and services rendered in good faith.
Many creditors are small and medium sized businesses, customers of the same Banks who are trying to deprive them of legal payment of their goods. It is now an urgent challenge for the Government through the Financial Regulator to introduce an acceptable code of practice in business and in the Banks.
Deputy Phelan challenged the three Banks concerned to come clean and name all of their clients who are creditors of Superquinn, all whom are entitled to a clear explanation about why they are being left high and dry by their own financial benefactors.
She said that those who were responsible in the Dáil for providing protective business and banking legislation in the past 14 years should be ashamed of themselves. They failed to act to provide legislative remedies in so many similar examples of questionable business ethics abuse in recent years.
“There is no doubt that responsibility for the final outcome of Superquinn for workers, creditors and consumers rests fairly and squarely on those in politics who failed to act in the public interest.” END
