Comhaltas Ardchomhairle must meet Disbanded Clontarf Branch Immediately to resolve Dispute

Issued : Wednesday 23 April, 2008

Labour Party Candidate for the Clontarf Electoral Ward, Cllr Aodhan O Riordain has called on Senator Labhras O Murchu and the Ardchomhairle of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann to immediately enter talks with the disbanded Clontarf CCE branch with a view to resolving the dispute that centres around the new 'Clasac' facility on the Alfie Byrne Road.

'After meeting the Clontarf committee last weekend it is clear to me that a lot of wonderful work is being done to promote traditional music amongst young Northsiders, and that the Clontarf branch are people of absolute integrity who desire a speedy and reasonable resolution to the current dispute' Cllr O Riordain said.

'To see so many young people playing together on a weekend night from all ages up to and including 18 year olds was an impressive sight, and it is clear that the current controversy is affecting the morale of the Clontarf members. Their demands are reasonable which include:

  • The lifting of the disbandment of the branch
  • The agreed management committee of the Clasac facility to be re-instated which had a small majority of Clontarf members in order to respect the local needs of this most active of branches

It is only by negotiation and dialogue that this dispute can be overcome and it is imperative that Senator O Murchu and the members of the Ard Comhairle agree to the request of the North Central Area Committee of Dublin City Council and meet with representatives of the disbanded branch. The work being done by the Clontarf branch is so important, and their potential within the new facility is so huge, that the proposed meeting must take place without delay so that traditional music can grow and prosper in North Dublin and throughout the city and country.'
