Action on Tourism must be central to Jobs Initiative says Spring
Issued : Tuesday 3 May, 2011
With details of the Government's proposals being developed, Arthur Spring TD believes that it is vital that it contains meaningful measures to encourage the creation of jobs at local level in the tourism industry. Deputy Spring is caling on the Government to take specific measures to make sure that we can invest in tourism projects that will not only create employment in the sector, but will also make Ireland a more attractive destination for visitors.
As Dail Deputy for the constituency of Kerry North/ West Limerick, an area of the country that is a rich in visitor attractions and potential visitor attractions, it is clear to me that bringing more visitors to Ireland, and giving them great reasons for staying longer, will form a critical part of our efforts to get Ireland out of the economic mire.
I have seen, at first hand, the positive impact that can result from supports provided by government departments and state agencies to small and innovative tourism enterprises.
There is huge potential in niche markets, such as activity holidays, eco tourism, food tourism and cultural tourism, potential that we simply must tap into.
Looking ahead to Job's Initiative, I would urge the Government, not to shy away from investing in these activities, so that we can deliver on jobs for our young people at local level in areas like the South West.
