PENSIONS CRISIS SHOWS GOVERNMENT DISREGARD FOR ELDERLY.

Issued : Wednesday 24 June, 2009

Cllr. Barry Nevin has hit out at the Government’s refusal to act to protect pensions and says it’s another example of the Government’s disregard for our Old Age Pensioners.

Day after day during my canvassing in Bray, I have heard the concerns and worries of the Old Age Pensioners.  But not only are they worried, they are also very angry at Fianna Fail and the Green Party and say that the Government is discriminating against the ordinary person on the street.

This anger is very justified as the Minister for Social & Family Affairs recent pension proposals were completely inadequate to protect pension schemes.  As well as failing to protect pensions, this Government is attacking the few provisions available to make life easier for the elderly. The cancellation of the Christmas Bonus for pensioners, the unemployed, single parents, carers and the disabled is another policy that demonstrates the reality of a government with nothing but indifference to the problems that people face.
