Marking Europe Day
Posted on May 09, 2012
To mark Europe Day, as Chairperson of the Joint Committee on European Union Affairs, I welcomed over sixty Transition Year students from Meath to the Houses of the Oireachtas. Upon their arrival, they were photographed on the steps of Leinster House waving national flags from across the European Union.
After this, we had an interesting discussion about Ireland and the European Union, the Dáil and Seanad, and the issues that affect young people in Ireland today. The students were very interested in the various issues and made their views known.

Boots on the ground campaigning for the Stability Treaty
Posted on May 09, 2012
Up and down the country Labour members and reps have been knocking on doors talking to people about why they should vote Yes in the forthcoming Stability Treaty referendum. Over the last while Deputy John Lyons has been wearing out the shoe leather in Ballymun where the reception on the doors has been very positive.
Deputy Lyons said: "People have been very engaged about the Stability Treaty and asking lots of questions. They realise the importance of the Treaty for Ireland's future and how it won't be business as usual for Ireland if the Treaty isn't passed."
Over the weekend Deputy Michael McCarthy visited the Kinsale Seven annual rugby event with MEP Phil Prendergast and Cllr Gearoid Buckley where he officially launched his Stability Treaty campaign.

Voting Yes for Stability Treaty is a vote for recovery
Posted on May 08, 2012
Today we officially launched our Stability Treaty campaign. Speaking at the launch the Tánaiste, Eamon Gilmore said, "Labour is calling for a YES vote in the referendum, because we believe that the Treaty is necessary to stabilise the Euro and underpin investor confidence in Ireland. A YES vote provides certainty on how we can continue to fund the State. We believe it provides a platform for stability at home and in Europe, on which we can build economic recovery".

Stability is necessary for growth
Posted on May 02, 2012
Speaking to the IIEA this afternoon, the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore called for an 'open, constructive and truthful' debate about what the Stability Treaty means for Ireland.
Deputy Gilmore said the Stability Treaty is an important part of Europe's response to the crisis in the euro because we cannot have stability and growth in Ireland without stability and growth in Europe.

Are you registered to vote?
Posted on April 30, 2012
With polling day for the Stability Treaty just four weeks away, the Labour Party's Director of Elections, Minister Joan Burton is calling on everyone who is eligible to vote to make sure that they can vote.
The general supplementary electoral register allows new voters to register and existing voters to update and amend their contact details. The deadline for this register is on Monday 14th May. The deadline for the postal and special electoral register is this Wednesday, May 2nd.
With these deadlines in mind it's crucial that people check the register in time, so that they can ensure that they can get their polling cards in time for the May 31st vote on the Stability Treaty.

Launching our Stability Treaty poster
Posted on April 30, 2012
This morning we launched our Stability Treaty poster with Eamon Gilmore TD, Joan Burton TD and Dominic Hannigan TD.
'It's about stability' is written across the poster and this was emphasised by the Tánaiste and Party Leader Eamon Gilmore when he said: "I don't claim that the Stability Treaty is the solution to all our problems. But it's a very important part of the solution. For a stable euro, for investor confidence and for recovery, for a vote of confidence in our future, I urge everyone to support it."

Stability Treaty sends out robust message to global investors
Posted on April 27, 2012
Speaking in the Dáil about the Stability Treaty, Deputy Michael McCarthy said that contrary to much of the 'ill-conceived rhetoric being peddled by anti-treaty sides' this is a stability treaty and 'its ratification is fundamental to the growth of the economy'.
"By ratifying this treaty, Ireland is sending a robust message to potential global investors that this is a country that is confident, united and is a place worthy of doing business and in which to create jobs. It is not the solution to the jobs crisis but will lock into the Government's broader pro-jobs and pro-growth strategy and will send a strong signal to the world that Ireland is serious about stability."
You can see the rest of what Deputy McCarthy said in the accompanying video.
