Civil Unions Bill back in the Dáil

Posted on October 30, 2007 at 05:12 PM

Once again Labour’s Civil Union Bill will be discussed during Private Members Time in the Dáil this week. Proposed by Brendan Howlin TD the Bill is designed to give full legal recognition to same sex unions creating a status relationship equivalent to marriage for the benefit of people who are the same sex.

Speaking on the motion Deputy Howlin said: “I brought this Bill to the Dail in February of this year when it was supported by the Green Party and was praised by many individual TDs on the Government benches.” You can read the rest of Brendan's statement here and more on the Bill itself here.

The Bill is being re-tabled because the then Minister for Justice Michael McDowell moved to have the Second Reading of the Bill postponed for six months knowing it would be after the General Election and the Bill would fall with the dissolution of the 29th Dáil.

So what can you do? You could contact your TD and ask them to support the Bill. Contact details for all members of the Oireachtas can be found at this link. You can also find out more information on events around the Bill on Facebook here. If you have any comments to make on the Bill you can do so at the end of this post.
