Brendan Leahy - Unanimously Selected for Contest Local Elections for Labour Party

Issued : Tuesday 3 June, 2008

Cllr. Brendan Leahy, who has twice topped the poll in Skibbereen Town Council elections, has been unanimously selected to contest the forth-coming local elections in the Skibbereen Electoral Area. Speaking at the selection convention last night Cllr. Leahy expressed his gratitude to the local Party membership for their support and confidence in him.

He said, ‘If elected I pledge to represent the people of West Cork to the best of my ability. I am well aware of the many problems facing the people of West Cork, and I believe that a Labour voice on Cork County Council is badly needed to address these issues.

‘I look forward to the campaign and I look forward to working with all the Labour Party members in the Electoral Area. It will not be easy, but with hard work and a strong campaign the seat is ours for the taking.'

Senator Michael McCarthy wished the former Mayor of Skibbereen every success and assured him that no effort would be spared in securing a Council seat.

Senator McCarthy said, ‘I believe that the Labour Party is the only Party that offers the electorate real change, and positive solutions to the many problems facing the people. When other parties supported the imposition of planning charges - another form of indirect taxation that has cost young people thousands of Euro - the Labour Party was a lone voice on Cork County Council.

‘If elected, I know that Brendan Leahy will make an invaluable contribution to that voice in County Hall.'

Cllr. Leahy was also congratulated by his colleague, Cllr. Richie Carthy, who wished him every success in the task ahead.

Cllr. Carthy said that, ‘Brendan Leahy is a great candidate and has the makings of fine County Councillor. No effort will be spared in securing the seat in the Local Elections next year.
