LABOUR WOMEN COLLECT FUNDS FOR WOMENS SHELTER IN HATI

Issued : Tuesday 23 February, 2010

To mark the International Women’s Day Labour Women, the women’s section of the Labour Party, is collecting Funds for women’s shelters in Haiti. Labour Women is supporting the Unifem (UN organisation working to build the lives of women in developing countries) Haiti Appeal providing shelters for women and children in Haiti fleeing violence. Labour Women have set up a collection in aid of Unifem, who aim to raise 2 million dollars, and will donate the funds collected to Unifem on 5th March to mark the International Women’s Day

‘Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and providing shelter to women and children has been difficult as it is. Since the earthquake women and children are more defenseless than before. Many are sleeping rough, have lost family members and are vulnerable to violence. Those who were already living in shelters have now lost their protection’, says Katherine Dunne Labour Women Chair. ‘While a lot of the work is focused on providing emergency assistance to the people of Haiti, the safety of women and children can be overlooked. The wonderful work many organisations, including the Irish organisations, is vital, and we urge people to continue to support them. But we also ask people to donate to targeted measures such as the Unifem women’s shelters.’ Labour Women welcome donations until 5th March at www.labour.ie/labourwomen  or cheque payable to ‘Labour Women Haiti Appeal’  sent to the Labour Party, 17 Ely Place, Dublin 2.
