€600,000 announced for Barrack Street development- Lynch
Issued : Wednesday 1 February, 2012
As Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on the Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht I would like to welcome the announcement by the Minister of State for Transport Alan Kelly that €600,000 in funding has been approved for the development of Barrack Street in the centre of Cork City.
Barrack Street is an area of significant heritage with the Elizabeth Fort site and St. Finbarre's Cathedral. This announcement could not have come at a more opportune time as also in this area is the former Beamish distillery, which has just been granted planning permission to become a new conference centre.
The regeneration of this area will have many positive knock-on effects for local businesses, and will no doubt increase tourism potential in the Southgate Bridge and Barrack Street environs.
This investment in assisting this quarter to flourish will do much to enhance Cork City's already established reputation as being one of the world's top city break locations.
