RYAN WELCOMES GOVERNMENTS COMMENTS ON REVERSAL IN MINIMUM WAGE CUT

Issued : Thursday 14 April, 2011

Labour Cllr. Darren Ryan has welcomed the Minister’s comments that the  cut in the national minimum wage will be reversed.

Cllr. Ryan said that “The cut in the minimum wage represented a real low in Fianna Fail’s handling of the economic downturn. It attacked the lowest paid workers in society, who stood to lose €40 per week from their wage packet. It lacked all sense of social justice and fairness.

The Labour Party led the opposition to this cruel cut and made its reversal a central plank of its election pledge. Its reversal will vindicate Labour’s belief that the lowest paid workers should be protected first and that work should be rewarded.

This is an issue of equity and fairness. The notion that we can recover from our economic difficulties by cutting the wage packets of those earning as little as €346 per week, by €40, is not just immoral, but economically illiterate.

Labour always has been, and remains the Party of work. By successfully campaigning and ensuring the reversal of this cut, Labour’s decision to enter government has made a real difference in people’s lives.

Cllr. Darren Ryan.
