Port of Cork Update
Issued : Monday 15 February, 2010
Areas : Passage West
Members of the Port of Cork addressed Passage West Town Council last week before the February monthly meeting of the Council. They outlined their need to get out of the City and Tivoli and therefore the need to find a new site for liquid bulks, solid bulks and containers.
Their presentation indicated that they had looked at 12 locations within the harbour and one outside to the east. After considering all sites they have identified 3 clear favourites.
- Ringaskiddy
- Dognose Bank
- Marino Point
My impression from the discussion was that they have a clear preference for the Ringaskiddy site but that they have not ruled out splitting the operation, putting some activities in Ringaskiddy and some in Marino point. They did not seem to put much emphasis on the development of facilities at the Dognose bank.
The Town Council as a whole are not in favour of any port activities at Marino point especially a LPG (Liquid Petrolium Gas) terminal as this would result in the return of the explosion risk which held the town back for so long.
