Port of Cork Update July 2010

Issued : Monday 5 July, 2010

Over the last number of months the Port of Cork have been engaged in a strategic review of their operations.

This process involved;

  • Reviewing their failed planning application from their proposed move to Ringaskiddy
  • Identifying new potential sites
  • Identifying Key requirements for developing their business in the future
  • Consulting the Public on their plans

Following this process they have decided to move their container and bulk operations to a site in Ringaskiddy which will be smaller in scale than the previous plan. They are also looking at using Marino Point (across the river from Passage West) as a secondary site for bulk/general cargo and liquid bulks.

Any future developments will occur in a phased manner with due regard for the infrastructure which will need to be provided to cope with increased traffic in the lower harbour. This could prove to be good news for Carrigaline residents who would benefit from road network upgrades which might otherwise suffer as the government cuts back in capital spending projects.
