Labour Senator Denis Landy this week disassociated himself from the comments made by Junior Minister Kathleen Lynch to members of Service Users Group of the Psychiatric Services in South Tipperary who attended recent deputation in Dublin with the Minister.

During the deputation Minister Lynch used the term that the decision to close St Michael’s was “not set in stone but set in blood” and she also told the deputation that she hadn’t invited them up to Dublin than they had come up at their own behest.

Speaking on the matter this week in Leinster House Senator Landy said that “These types of comments are totally inappropriate and insensitive particularly when people are discussing future health services and there is no place for this type of language. I am disappointed that it was used. I have made my views known to Minister Lynch on the matter and I am publically now disassociating myself from what Minister Lynch said to the service users. I am however pleased that following my conversation with Minister Lynch on the matter she subsequently apologised on the floor of Dail Eireann to those who attended the meeting for any hurt that may have been caused to them. I hope this is the end of the matter and that from now on people will be treated with the respect that they deserve and which is required from a Minister working with people in the psychiatric services” concluded Senator Landy.
