Hurley welcomes publication of Plan for Digital Ireland.

Issued : Thursday 17 February, 2011

Cllr Hurley said “Nowhere is this more relevant than in Carlow. We have a major problem with access to broadband here in this county and it is essential that we catch up.”

Speaking at the launch of the plans, Eamon Gilmore said: “Despite the often touted rhetoric of the Smart Economy, Ireland lags significantly behind the EU and the OECD in many crucial aspects. The failure of Fianna Fáil Governments over the past decade to roll out adequate connectivity has left Ireland languishing well behind our international competitors in the broadband stakes.”

Cllr Hurley added that the availability of high speed broadband is crucial for business and job creation, as well as being key to attracting outside investment and “this is not a time to be lagging behind”.

“Decent broadband is as important to Ireland in the 21st century as electricity was in the thirties. It is our belief that the basis of a future smart economy and job creation is high speed broadband,” he said.

“The last government promised technological advancement, but if you live in Fenagh, for example, you are still waiting for high speed broadband,” he said, welcoming his party’s newly published plans.
