Parents concerned about school places in fast growing Ashbourne – Hannigan.

Issued : Friday 26 March, 2010

A call for a review of school places and educational needs in fast growing towns like Ashbourne, has come from Senator Dominic Hannigan.

The Labour Senator questioned the Minister for Education this week on the issue of school places.

“I know that parents in the Ashbourne area are concerned about school places. I’m glad to say, from the Minister’s response, it seems the department expects all eligible children will have places next September,” said Senator Hannigan.

Senator Hannigan said he is aware that the three schools in the locality are fast approaching capacity.

“It seems the local schools are filling up fast and they have little room for expansion. In the medium to longer term it could be that a new school will be required for the Ashbourne area,” said Hannigan.

“It is good that parents have been reassured about next September but to bring clarity to the situation for 2011 and beyond, we need a proper review of educational needs in Ashbourne,” the Senator concluded.
