ESTATE MANAGEMENT PROJECTS SHOULD REMAIN OPEN
Issued : Wednesday 25 January, 2012
The Labour Party TD for Dublin South West, Eamonn Maloney has described the decision to withdraw
funding from the Fettercairn and Killinarden Projects as very foolish. This decision has been made as a
result of the reduction in the budget of the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government.
"I have written to the Department objecting to the decision and have personally discussed the matter with
the Minister for the Environment urging him to find adequate monies to fund these Projects.
The projects which commenced in 1998 have made valuable contributions in disadvantaged communities,
providing leadership in tackling problems of drug usage, drug dealing and all anti social behaviour. At a time
when the economic difficulties of the country will bring considerable strain to all communities, we cannot
afford to lose the great experience and influence gained by the projects.
A consultation process will take place in the hope of identifing alternative sources of funding in 2012.
I welcome this consultation and encourage all to engage in the process for the betterment of our communities".
