LABOUR'S Castleconnell electoral area candidate Elena Secas is urging the public to participate in the Shannon River Basin Management Plan, currently out for public consultation.
Ms Secas said the plan concerned managing and protecting the natural waterways of the Shannon and its tributaries and the area took in almost all of County Limerick. Speaking after an information meeting at Limerick County Council, Ms Secas said:
"I would urge the public to take part in this plan, as good water quality is a precious resource that all of us in the community will benefit from.
"We can all send comments or make submissions on the draft plan by visiting www.shannonrbd.com or emailing info@shannonrbd.com.
"The draft river basin management plan gives us all an opportunity to get involved, have a say into what the problems are in relation to our rivers, lakes, coastal and ground waters, and, crucially, to plan what actions should be taken to put things right," she said.
Water quality was an important issue for the county council, Ms Secas said in the wake of the recent boil and public health notices issued in relation to the water supply in areas such as Adare and Ballingarry.
