Byrne calls on McDowell to give commmitment on Afghan asylum seekers
Issued : Tuesday 16 May, 2006
Speaking in Dublin this morning, Labour Cllr. Eric Byrne called on Justice Minister Michael McDowell to give a commitment that the Afghan asylum seekers currently on hunger strike in St. Patrick’s Cathedral would not be deported until each of their cases has been reviewed. Cllr. Byrne also said that, in view of the chaotic conditions prevailing in Afghanistan, there was a strong argument for granting the men humanitarian leave to remain in Ireland if a further review finds that they do not quality for refugee status.
“Amnesty International’s most recent report on Afghanistan states that lawlessness and insecurity increased last year and armed groups committed abuses against civilians with impunity.
“The Amnesty report also notes that countries are returning failed Afghan asylum seekers without ensuring that they can return in dignity and safety.
“I do not believe that these men would have gone on hunger strike unless they were seriously concerned for their safety if they are deported back to Afghanistan. Therefore, I am calling on Minister McDowell to give a commitment that they will not be deported until each of their cases has been reviewed again, and to consider granting them humanitarian leave to remain if it is found that they do not qualify for refugee status", Cllr. Byrne concluded.
