Hard questions must be answered on childrens' hospital

Issued : Tuesday 5 September, 2006

“While there is no one who can disagree with the position to provide the best tertiary paediatric treatment for children in Ireland, the startling facts that a site has been chosen through political consideration for Bertie Ahern is not just outrageous but should immediately be revisited,” Councillor Eric Byrne has said.

“Huge questions still remain over the site of the new children’s hospital in a chronically congested inner city location. Already the Crumlin Children’s Hospital suffers from massive traffic congestion generated by patients, visitors and staff. It beggars belief that the accumulated traffic from Crumlin and Tallaght hospitals should makes the site unviable.

“There are still huge questions to be asked and answered on what will become of the site in Crumlin if such a move takes place. It is time for the Minister of Health to clearly spell out what is envisaged vis-à-vis the state-of-the-art tertiary paediatric hospital and all of the other normal non- tertiary activities carried out in a paediatric hospital. It is time for the posturing and political interference to stop and the hard questions to be answered on the future use of the Crumlin Hospital children’s site.”
