Approval for Ring Water Supply Sheme

Mr John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, today (8 September 2010) approved Waterford County Council*s design proposals to upgrade and expand the water supply infrastructure in the Ring Peninsula and surrounding areas under the Ring/Helvic Water Supply Scheme. The scheme has been included for funding under his Department*s Water Services Investment Programme 2010 - 2012.   

Under the scheme, Waterford County Council proposes to undertake a programme of works to improve the water supply to the Ring Peninsula, which has seen an expansion in the number of resident population along with an increase in tourist population. The scheme comprises of a new water source at Mapestown, along with new reservoirs at Robert*s Cross and Byrne*s Cross and improvements to the networks. These works will ensure the supply of water during peak periods of summer distribution

demand and for future development, and also guarantee that water quality meets National and EU drinking water standards.

*This important scheme represents continuing capital investment under the Water Services Investment Programme to improve the infrastructure in the Waterford region*, said the Minister. *This investment also reflects the Government*s commitment to ensure our public water supplies deliver a reliable service which is fully compliant with drinking water standards*, the Minister added.

The Minister*s approval to the scheme design now clears the way for Waterford County Council to prepare the contract documents for the scheme.
