Council questions from Gerard Corcoran

Issued : Tuesday 17 February, 2009

Cllr.Ger Corcoran: When will "Westmeath County Council" repair serious potholes along the side of the road in Moyvore? Can any funding be provided this year for this purpose? Can the village be considered under village enhancement scheme?

Reply: Three sections in Moyvore have been identified for new footpaths and are included in this years work programme. This programme is dependant on funding from DOE.

Cllr. Ger Corcoran: Can "Westmeath County Council" excessively pursue ESB to illuminate street lights at Dalystown National School, Castlepark estate in Rochfortbridge and opposite the dispensary in Castletown Geoghegan? It was promised that these would be illuminated within six weeks. None of the above has been attended to.

Reply: This work is included on the 2009 Public Lighting Programme. All civil works are complete on these jobs. ESB requires payment in advance. This office is waiting for the ESB to price the work. It is estimated that it will take 3 months to process this work.

Cllr Ger Corcoran: Could serious consideration and investigations be carried out into the removal of the dangerous bend at Foxes Hill at Tyrellspass Cemetary on the road to Croghan

Reply: This office has examined this problem. The removal of this bend and provision of a footpath in the LHS southbound would be a costly undertaking. It requires the setback of existing land boundary necessitating a retaining wall. It maybe preferable to construct a new footpath on the RHS southbound opposite the cemetery.

Cllr.Ger Corcoran When will house construction begin at the site beside Woodside in Castsletown Geoghegan

Reply: Work will commence in the next two weeks

Cllr.Ger Corcoran When will work commence on no. 13 Tullamore Road in Kilbeggan, a semi-detached house which is currently an eye sore and bringing down the appearance of the area (referred to Housing mullingar)

Reply: A cost has been prepared by this office and has been forwarded to Housing Section for inclusion in their Capital Works Programme in 2009. Work will commence in the next month

Cllr.Ger Corcoran Could Westmeath County Council replace the lane direction arrow on the traffic island opposite Kilbeggan Post Office. The current direction arrow is very severely cracked and broken.

Reply: This work will be included in Routine Works Programme in 2009.

Cllr. Ger Corcoran: That "Westmeath County Council" takes charge of the following housing estates in Rochfordbridge:

  • Rahanine Manor.
  • Stonebridge.
  • Castlelost vale.

Reply: Taking in charge of housing estates is outlined in the WCC document ‘Taking in Charge' Feb 2006 and is available on the Westmeath Co Co website under Legal & Enforcement. This document is recommended to interested parties.

Cllr. Ger Corcoran: That "Westmeath County Council" re-examine the position and design of the roundabout in Rochfortbridge coming from the R400 into the main street. The position and size of this roundabout is proving to be a major obstacle and requires unsafe and unnecessary maneouvering by motorists and may well result in more serious accidents than heretofore.

Reply: This office is unaware of problems with this roundabout. It will investigate this matter with NRADO in Mullingar.

Cllr. Ger Corcoran: That "Westmeath County Council" takes immediate steps to provide a safe footpath from the Castleview estate in Tyrellspass up to and along the front of the cemetery.

Reply: The provision of a footpath in front of the cemetery requires the set back of land boundary along the road side. This office has examined this problem. The removal of this bend and provision of a footpath in the LHS southbound would be a costly undertaking. It requires the setback of existing land boundary necessitating a retaining wall. It maybe preferable to construct a new footpath on the RHS southbound opposite the cemetery.

Cllr. Ger Corcoran: That "Westmeath County Council" reduces the speed limit from 80km to 50km at Tonaphort and along the relic road in Kilbeggan.

Reply: This office will include these locations on a list of proposals for the reduction in speed limits within the county. This is a relatively slow process. The last application for new speed limits occurred in 2006 and was adopted in 2007.
