Don’t Pull the Plug on Crumlin Swimming Pool- Upton

Issued : Tuesday 3 November, 2009

News that the operation of Crumlin Swimming Pool is under threat is very concerning according Cllr Henry Upton, the local Labour for the Crumlin/Kimmage area.

Cllr Henry Upton stated “A report given to the Arts, Culture, Leisure and Youth Affairs SPC of Dublin City Council recommended that it is “prudent to review the continued operation” of Crumlin Swimming Pool. I would be very concerned by any such decision. Even during the Celtic Tiger the Crumlin area suffered from a lack of investment and the provision of services. Any further reduction of the meagre services provided in the Dublin 12 area will serve only to undermine services provided in this economically deprived area.”

Cllr Upton commented “Everyone knows that the provision of services and activities is vital to give children an option instead of hanging around. The pool also provides a place for people of all ages, including those who may have recently become unemployed a place to stay active. Closing the pool, together with the closure of the KWCDT recently just shows that the areas that have the least are the ones which suffer the most  from the financial crisis the toxic triangle of developers, bankers and Fianna Fáil have driven us to. ”

Cllr Henry Upton concluded “The solution to the problem in Crumlin is to reopen the local authority swimming pool programme, which has been closed to new entrants since 2000, to allow for an upgrade of the pool. This would provide construction jobs as well as providing a top class facility to an area which has suffered decades of neglect from central government. I am calling on the Government to reopen this programme and ensure that Crumlin is top of the list .”
