Upton condemns Dublin City Council decision to privatise the bin services

Issued : Friday 13 January, 2012

Labour Councillor for Crumlin/Kimmage, Henry Upton has condemned the decision by Dublin City council to privatise the household bin collection services in Dublin City. Dublin City Council is the last Dublin local authority to privatise the service

“I have voted against the privatisation of the waste management services on 3 occasions in the Council chamber. It proves how inadequate our local democracy is when the City Manager can ignore the unanimous decision by all the Councillors in the Council and continue with the proposal to divest the City Council of the responsibility for collecting household waste.

According to Cllr Upton Dublin City Councillors were informed for the “first time last Monday that an upfront payment service would be required from the new waste collection providers. “

The Council have done a deal with Greyhound Recycling and Recovery who will collect household waste from the 16th January 2012. The current Annual Service Charge will be maintained for 2012. Residents will be required to pay the Annual Service Charge, in full, within 30 days from Monday 16th January. Greyhound Recycling and Recovery will not collect bins from households who have not paid the annual service charge within the 30 days stated Cllr. Upton.

This is a complete change from the current position and will lead to much confusion and annoyance. This is the wrong decision and the fact that the City Manage does not have to listen to local Councillors shows how reform of local Government is badly needed concluded Cllr. Upton
