Welcome from Senator Ivana Bacik Justice; Arts, Sports and Tourism
Ivana lives in the city centre, in Dublin South East, with her partner Alan and their two young daughters, Cyan and Louie.
Ivana graduated from Trinity with a law degree in 1989, and was President of TCD Students’ Union from 1989-1990. During her term she and her colleagues in Trinity were taken to court by the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child (SPUC) for providing information regarding abortion services in the UK. Ivana and the students were defended by future President Mary Robinson in a case that paved the way for legal change in favour of women’s rights.
Ivana is Reid Professor of Criminal Law in Trinity and was elected as a Senator by graduates of Trinity College in 2007. Among the issues she has raised in Seanad Eireann since then are:
• Savage cutbacks to the Equality Authority
• The need for a universal childcare system
• The economic crisis and its effects on employment and families
With the support of Friends of the Earth Ireland Ivana has also published and begun the debate on climate change legislation that would strengthen Ireland’s commitment to its Kyoto targets.
Ivana organised an all-party event to mark the 90th Anniversary of women’s franchise in Ireland. The event, held in December 2008, saw current and former female members of the Oireachtas come together in a unique event. In 2009, Ivana authored a report on women’s participation in politics, which was adopted unanimously by the Joint Oireachtas Justice Committee. The report recommended the introduction of legislation requiring political parties to set quotas for the selection of women candidates. It was debated in the Seanad in April-May 2010.

Ivana has been involved with a number of organisations campaigning for progressive change in Ireland and abroad including the Irish Family Planning Association, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, and Concern.
A regular contributor to the print and broadcast media, Ivana has also contributed to a range of publications on legal and political issues. Ivana’s book Kicking and Screaming – a roadmap for progressive politics in Ireland – was published in 2004 by O’Brien Press.
Ivana has been a member of the Labour Party since her teens. She contested the 2004 European Elections for the party along with sitting Labour MEP Proinsias de Rossa. While missing out on a seat Ivana polled exceptionally well. In June 2009 Ivana stood as the Labour candidate in the Dublin Central by-election and came third, polling 17% of the vote. She remains an active member in Dublin South-East for the Labour Party, and is vice-chair of the Fitzgerald-Kearney branch in that constituency. She also chairs a local multidenominational school start-up group, Portobello Educate Together.
