Defending Waterford City's Waiver Scheme
Issued : Friday 28 January, 2011
Cllr. Jack Walsh, The Labour Party, says he is aware that many people were apprehensive that the maintenance of the Waste Collection waiver would be at risk when City Council ceased to provide the service. Cllr. Walsh said he understands and can appreciate people’s concern given that many vulnerable families are dependant on the waiver, especially in these difficult economic times. “The maintenance of the waiver was a crucial issue for me in the negotiations leading up the City Estimates meeting in December” Cllr. Jack Walsh stated.
“I am delighted that the City Manager confirmed to City Councillors on 26th January that there is an agreement in place between City Council and the new operator, Oxigen Environmental, to ensure that the present waiver scheme will continue to apply for the next four years. Further more, for those who qualify the cost will remain at €50 for each of those four years” Cllr. Walsh added.
This agreement has been publicly acknowledged by the City Manager and Oxigen Environmental.
“It is important to reassure people, who may be receiving a City Council waiver at present that it will continue to be available under the new arrangement” Cllr Walsh believes.
In four years time a new Council will be elected. “I want to state that if I am returned to serve again I will also fight as vigorously to protect the waiver scheme for the life of the new council” Cllr. Jack Walsh concluded.
