ASSESSMENT CRITERIA MUST BE AGREED BEFORE GLOBALISATION FUND IS DISTRIBUTED

Issued : Thursday 26 November, 2009

Limerick City Labour T.D. Jan O’Sullivan today welcomed the announcement that €22 million has been approved by the European parliament for the retraining and up-skilling of displaced workers from Dell and associated companies who were contracted by Dell to provide various services and products.

‘It is extremely important that an independent verification process is quickly established so that those workers who wish to retrain and return to education are listened to and properly advised as to the most appropriate course available for them.

We are very fortunate to have an excellent third level sector in Limerick and for many workers who now wish to retrain it is probably many years since they were in any formal educational environment.

An individual assessment procedure will ensure that the views and talents of individuals are considered before the most suitable options are offered so that we can avoid  people entering courses and colleges that may not be suitable.

This allocation of €22 million will contribute enormously to ensuring that those workers who wish to consider alternative career options will be facilitated. However it is critical that we maintain a clear objective in terms of putting the needs of those whom this money is targeted at first.
