BLACK BRIDGE MUST RE-OPEN IN 2011.
Issued : Thursday 6 January, 2011
Limerick Labour Deputy Jan O’Sullivan has again written to Limerick County Council to urge them to re-open the ‘Black Bridge’ which links Gillogue in Co. Clare to Plassey in one of the most beautiful spots in Limerick.
The bridge was closed following the flooding last winter when it was feared to be unsafe after tree trunks and other debris were lodged against its arches. Deputy O’Sullivan contacted both Waterways Ireland and Limerick County Council at the time and was told that a shortage of money meant that no immediate action could be taken.
“Limerick County Council told me that the cost of examining the damage alone was prohibitive. My fear is that the closure is being put on the long finger in the hope that the public will accept the closure.
Like many others, I walked those banks a lot over the Christmas holidays and the people I met do not accept that the Black Bridge should stay closed. It was extensively used by walkers, runners, fishermen and bird-watchers and it is part of Limerick’s history and heritage. It is a shame to see it fenced off.
I have asked Limerick County Council to have the necessary examination carried out. I believe it is unlikely that there will be major work needed; after all, it is a pedestrian bridge that doesn’t carry heavy loads and has a large number of supporting pillars.
Re-opening the Black Bridge should be on the County Council’s list of New Year’s resolutions”, concluded Deputy O’Sullivan
