Support staff in schools pay cuts

Issued : Thursday 27 January, 2011

Cllr. Jenny McHugh says the decision by the Department of Education and Skills to cut the pay of approx 17,000 staff, including school secretaries and caretakers in schools is regressive.

This will have to be reviewed she says, "It is inconcievable that the Department of Education and Skills would instruct Boards of Management to reduce the pay of these workers in schools.  This would put an additional burden on low paid workers who also for the first time will have to pay the Universal Social Charge and as a result will bring some workers who are on the minimum wage into the tax net."
