Cllr McGarry has called on the government to treat women who have been victims of sexual assaults in the Sligo area with greater dignity and sensitivity. To provide the women of Sligo with an improved service the government first needs to increase funding to Sligo Rape Crisis centre. Cllr McGarry said that despite the unfortunate incidences of sexual violence towards women the government has capped core funding since 2002 to frontline services responding to violence against women.

The H.S.E. advertises regularly on radio the importance of breastcheck for women between 50 and 64. They stress that this service is available, important and free. The women of the North-West, says Cllr. McGarry, are getting more and more infuriated by this use of the airwaves which brings home to them that they are outside the regular free screening area.

Cllr McGarry speaking on the nurses' dispute has said we are currently facing a serious escalation. It is the latest problem to befall a Health service which has lurched from crisis to crisis since Mary Harney began her stewardship of the Department of Health.

Cllr. McGarry said the N16 Road is a very significant road which bridges the gap between Southern and Northern Ireland. The NRA has decided that the work necessary for the upgrading of the road will not be undertaken until 2016. The test used by the NRA to determine which roads are of priority for them to work on is to look at the amount of people who use the road on a regular basis. It is therefore up to us to present them with a convincing argument as to why the upgrading of this road must become a priority for them

Cllr Jim McGarry described this morning as a disgrace that up to 70 houses throughout Sligo Town, in areas such as St. Edwards Terrace, St. Bridget's Place, Cranmore, Doorly Park, Tracy Avenue and Jinks Avenue are boarded up.He was commenting on a report provided to him by the Borough Council which details the list of houses.
