OPERA SITE PURCHASE OFFERS POTENTIAL FOR UNIVERSITY & Institute of Technology

Issued : Monday 21 November, 2011

Labour City Councillor Joe Leddin has welcomed the purchase of the derelict Opera Centre by Limerick City Council and has stated that the purchase now offers significant potential for this part of the City for mixed use development

The site has been a considerable eyesore in the heart of the City for many years following the unsuccessful redevelopment of the site as a commercial shopping centre. Limerick City Council can now progress with plans for the site that extends over 3 acres and is strategically located within the City.

I believe that Limerick City Council should now engage with the University of Limerick and Limerick Institute of Technology with a view to strengthening links between both organisations and an obvious opportunity now exists for either College to acquire space for the provision of educational facilities.

The site presents challenges in the nature and type of development that can create jobs while simultaneously revitalising the City Centre.

I am delighted that the Government have advanced the necessary funding to the City Council. I have brought the site to the attention of the Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore on many occasions over the last number of years.
