John Feely
John Feely contested the 2009 local elections representing the Carrick-on-Shannon area of Leitrim County Council.
Born in Carrick-on-Shannon, the son of the late Mattie and Katie Feely. He obtained a Leitrim County Council scholarship to University College Galway. After obtaining a degree in Chemistry he commenced employment in County Antrim with a multinational chemical company. John’s career included posts with General Motors and a senior management position with Intel in the USA and in Leixlip, Co Kildare. He also worked for FAS as a senior training adviser to the Irish Chemicals Industry. During this period he obtained a Masters Degree in economics and statistics from Trinity College Dublin. He currently manages his own training consultancy company.
His political activity commenced when he was a student in Galway, where he was recruited into the Labour Party by the Roscommon Labour TD and Senator Jack McQuillan and Dr Noel Browne. He was Election Agent for former President Mary Robinson in her general election campaign and Director of Elections for Joan Burton TD. More recently he was the Labour Party’s regional organiser for Connacht Ulster. This was the second occasion that John faced the Leitrim electorate. John’s family links in Carrick-on-Shannon included the late Kathleen and Jackie Mulhern. His late grandmother was from Borncoola, where he still has relations. John’s area of political interest is in education, health, employment generation, farm support and how best Leitrim can prepare for current and future challenges.
John Feely is a founder member of the Carrick-on-Shannon Family Life Centre and a committee member of the Historical Society. He is an active trade unionist and a trustee of the Leitrim Branch of SIPTU. John lives in Kilmore with his wife Noreen Gilfillan and they have a son James and daughter Carol.
