Having worked as a psychiatric nurse in St Stephen’s Hospital in Glanmire, he has lived locally with his wife Marion and their two children for the last 20 years.
He is Chairman of Glanmire Business Network - a business support network with over 200 local businesses. He is also chairman of Riverstown Football Club (juvenille soccer club), Director of Glanmire Area Community Association and member of SAFE in Glanmire and head of league development with Cork Women's and Schoolgirls League (soccer).
A committed community activist John contested an election in 2004, winning a Labour seat in Cork County Council on his first attempt. In 2009 he retained the seat, topping the poll with over 4,500 votes, the highest number of votes of any Labour candidate in the country. In the 2011 General Election he polled over 6,000 first preference votes
John kept an audio diary of his campaign in conjunction with a new media specialist Paul O'Mahony and was part of his strategy to be open with his constituents by using accessible new media. He is also active on Twitter. (@johngilroyteam)
