Councillor John Kelleher has been a member of Cork City Council since 1982. He was born in 1949 and grew up near Glanmire, on the outskirts of the city. He attended Glounthaune primary school, St Finbarr's College, Farranferris and University College Cork, where he graduated in 1969.
He began working as a secondary school teacher in 1970 in the C.B.S. Kilkenny. It was there that he became involved in politics for the first time, citing an urge to end inequality, injustice and discrimination in Ireland and the world as the main motivation.
He returned to Cork in 1972 and worked for many years as a teacher in the C.B.S. Youghal. During that time he was an active member of the Association of Secondary Teachers (ASTI) holding various positions, including those of Branch Secretary and Chairperson, and as a member of the Central Executive Council.
John contested four General Elections in the Cork North Central constituency in the 1980's and early 1990's, and served as Lord Mayor of Cork city in 2002 until 2003.
He has been leader of the Labour Group on the City Council since 2004, and continues to represent the North East ward where he has been successful in the local elections of 1985, 1991, 1999,2004 and 2009
