LATEST LIVE REGISTER STATISTICS BRINGS MORE GRIM READING

Issued : Wednesday 9 September, 2009

Last weeks release of the latest live register figures show just how deeply the unemployment crisis is hitting and show how imperative prompt and decisive action is need to curb this appalling growing trend.

The problem of unemployment continues to have a devastating effect on many communities including Ballymun and Finglas. The latest figures show that there are three thousand five hundred and sixty three (3563) more people unemployed in the area than in August 2008. Unemployment figures in Ballymun have increased by one thousand and thirty eight and now stand at two thousand eight hundred and fifty three. Meanwhile over the same period, unemployment figures for Finglas have soared to six thousand and nine (6009), showing an increase of two thousand five hundred and twenty five (2525). Since the release of the latest figures, Finglas had been hit with a further blow, with the loss of 77 jobs in Georgia-Pacific.

These chronic figures, which are reflected throughout the whole country, indicate that the government have clearly taken their eye off the ball. It shows that Fianna Fail is clearly incapable of leading Ireland out of the recession. We cannot fix the hole in our public finances without getting people back to work. That means taking an innovative approach to job creation-quality jobs that cannot be moved around the globe at a whim.

The Labour Party believes that job creation, job retention, training and upskilling  are central  to fix the economy. If we are to do this we need to get people off the dole.
