Issued : Friday 21 January, 2011
Areas : Finglas Youth Service March
Local residents, young and old marched through the streets of Finglas last Wednesday demonstrating their anger and fear of more cuts to local youth services. Cllr. John Lyons joined the march in support of local residents concerns. Cllr. John Lyons, a teacher in St. Vincent’s Secondary School, Glasnevin, says that youth services are a vital part of the Finglas Community and any further axing of these services will have a drastic long term effect on the entire Finglas community.
“ The Finglas Youth Resource Centre and The Finglas Youth Service are an essential part of the local community. These services provide a time and space for young people to engage in a positive way. Recent years have seen budgets to youth services in Finglas being continuously cut. The community can’t take any more cuts. It is common knowledge that young people who are engaged in positive activities are less likely to become involved in anti-social behaviour. It’s a no brainer. Any cuts to young peoples services are going to lead to long term negative effects on the entire Finglas community in the future.”
“I believe a society should be judged on how it treats its youngest and eldest. It is quite clear that our present government doesn’t value young people in the way that it should.”
