DEIS schools deliver for students and communities
Issued : Wednesday 18 January, 2012
Speaking in the Dáil, John Lyons said to the Minister for Education that the additional teaching posts given to DEIS schools deliver for students and their communities and must be protected.
John said, ‘I attended what would be today a DEIS school and the children of my brothers and sisters attend DEIS schools. I know what that is like. I have spoken to the Minister and brought back to him what I have heard not only from listening to teachers but from people who I know, including my neighbours, whose children also attend DEIS schools.
John continued, ‘We are all aware that the needs in these schools are acute. The most difficult children are in these schools. However, the great thing is that when the resources are put in place one can transform this and this is what DEIS system is doing.’Following this and after meetings with Labour TDs, the Minister announced a review of the proposed changes to DEIS schools.
John welcomed this review ‘I am very pleased that the Minister has listened to my concerns and the concerns of the parents and staff of schools I have met across the constituency. Deputy Lyons concluded ‘I am optimistic that this review will be a positive result for DEIS schools but I will continue to work with the schools and the Minister until this review is published.
