As the first  Chairperson of the Economic Action Group (a sub-committee of the RAPID scheme), a position he held until mid-2004,this groups' objective was to draw up and implement an economic action plan for the town. Some of the actions achieved under this economic plan included the opening of a new tourist office, installation of promotional signage in the town, ‘Early Bird’ morning train to Galway City, the construction of an advance factory at the IDA Business Park and the securing of a tenant for same and the installation of the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) - fibre optic cable version of broadband technology throughout the town.

He has a particular interest in the provision of sporting facilities and played an active role in securing funding of  the €1.5 million Club development at Ballinasloe Town AFC (Soccer Club) which incorporates 2 grass playing pitches, flood lights, 2 astro-turf floodlit pitches, storage building, spectator terraced area and dressing rooms/clubhouse.

Johnny is also dedicated to campaigning for the preservation of services in Portiuncla Hospital and St Brigid’s Hospital and currently serves as the PRO of the Ballinasloe Hospital Action.
