Cllr Liam O'Brien
I was honoured and priveleged to be elected onto Muinebheag Town Council on my first attempt in 2004 and to be re-elected in 2009. The basis of my campaign was active community involvement. As a councillor I have maintained my strong involvement in the community through my membership of sporting and cultural organisations and, of course, through my work as a councillor. I also led a local campaign to retain a main Post Office in Bagenalstown. The belief in the importance of strong, progressive and cohesive communities lies at the core of my political philosophy.
I have campaigned on the following issues as a councillor:
I was instrumental in attracting a €300,000 investment to sports facilities at the McGrath Park, Bagenalstown.
I led a campaign to retain a main Post Office in Bagenalstown. Despite our efforts the Post Office was downgraded.
I have been very vocal on the need to improve recycling facilities.
I have raised the issue of attacks on foreigners and anti-social behaviour generally.
I supported the ending of drift net fishing which was decimating the salmon stocks on the Barrow and the Nore.
