B3 Cable workers must be properly compensated
Issued : Wednesday 14 July, 2010
Following the devastating news that 106 people have lost their jobs in B3 Cable Solutions in Longford Town, former TD for Longford, Cllr Mae Sexton has called on the authorities to immediately ensure that B3 Cable Solutions are compelled to comply with its obligations to the workforce.
Cllr Sexton said: “This well trained, highly skilled and flexible team have been treated in the most disgraceful manner by the company, and every effort must now be made to ensure that the workers receive a just and fair severance package.
“It appears that at the expense of the Longford operation, goods which have traditionally been produced in Longford, will now be supplied into the Irish market from B3 Cable Solutions UK and B3 Cable Solutions Spanish manufacturing plants.
“Subsidy hopping and relocation strategies adopted by companies abusing European funds cannot be tolerated, and if it emerges that B3 Cable Solutions have been involved in this kind of sharp practice, then the appropriate action must be taken. This kind of abuse of taxpayers must be eradicated.
“I have been speaking to both Proinsias De Rossa MEP and Marion Harkin MEP regarding the measures at EU level which will prevent this company from shirking its responsibility to the workers by transferring its operations to other European Member States, while failing to meet its obligations to the Irish workforce. A motion requesting specific information in relation to such funding to B3 Cable Solutions has been submitted to the EU Parliament.”
