Halt the incinerator before it's too late

Issued : Friday 27 November, 2009

Cllr. Maria Parodi announced today that she believes the decision to commence building of a 600,000 tonne incinerator in Poolbeg in a fortnight is reckless and not the best deal for Dublin.

“When the incinerator in Poolbeg was first proposed in the 1990’s our waste management structure in Dublin was extremely different than it is today. Now we have many options to deal with our waste and it is time for Dublin City Council to renegotiate and reconsider what is the best deal for the people of Dublin.”

“An oversized, costly facility in Poolbeg will not help us meet our environmental commitments to waste reduction and prevention. It will also be a disincentive to any ambitious programmes aimed at increasing waste recycling.”

“Last night, the Environmental Protection Agency published its National Waste Report 2008 and it confirms that municipal waste generation in Ireland fell by 5% last year. If that was the case in 2008 due to the economic downturn, we will be looking at further reductions in 2009. The City Council cannot continue to justify building this incinerator when the entire Dublin Region does not even produce enough waste to fill it.”

“Bottom line is that if we cannot fill it the taxpayer has to front the bill, this is not acceptable when there are other waste management options available that are better for the environment and for the people.”

“I am calling on the City Manager to halt the project before it’s too late. What we need now is a comprehensive independent review of the project to be carried out to determine whether there is still a need for it.”
