Local community stands strong at incinerator protest

Issued : Monday 14 December, 2009

Cllr Maria Parodi once against expressed her outrage today over the commencement of a grossly oversized 600,000 tonnes Incinerator in Dublin Bay.

A protest has been organised for 5:30pm this evening to facilitate the community’s opposition to this costly project going ahead.

Local Labour Councillor Maria Parodi said “the whole process has been undemocratic because despite widespread objections to the project from the community and public representatives, the Government and Dublin City Council have continued to bulldoze ahead with the project.”

“Dublin City Council should not have given the go ahead to commence building as some of the criteria set out by the Environmental Protection Agency and An Bord Pleanala has not been met.”

“This incinerator is a disincentive to any ambitious recycling, composting and waste reduction strategies. There are other waste management options available that are more environmentally friendly and more cost efficient and we should be exploring them in pursuit of a zero waste model.”

“I believe this incinerator is a huge mistake and will cost the Dublin region in the long run. That is why I will be standing alongside members of the community and the Labour Party this evening to demonstrate that for over a decade our community still stands strong together in opposition to this incinerator.”
