Cllr Maria Parodi Elected as Dublin's New Deputy Lord Mayor

Issued : Tuesday 28 June, 2011

Labour’s Councillor Maria Parodi expressed her delight and honour to be elected as Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin last night.

After being elected Cllr. Maria Parodi said “I am deeply honoured and delighted to be elected as Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin. I believe that deputy lord mayor is an extremely important position for the city; alongside the Lord Mayor, one which I am very passionate about. Dublin is a great city and like all cities our greatest asset is our people! That is why in my term as deputy Lord Mayor I will strive to represent our citizens in the best way possible while ensuring that the needs and views of all those living and working in our city are prioritised.”

Cllr. Parodi congratulated the new Lord Mayor Andrew Montague “both myself and Andrew are members of the transport and traffic SPC and we are very passionate about similar issues; such as, the expansion of Dublin Bikes and I look forward to working closely with him over the coming year. It is interesting that 2012 marks the 100 year anniversary of the foundation of the Irish Labour Party which is the oldest party in Ireland and Dublin City will be represented by a Labour Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor during the party’s centenary.”

Cllr Parodi stated “I represent Dublin South East Inner City; it is an area in the city that is bounded by the Liffey and the Grand Canal which stretches from Sandymount to Ringsend, Pearse Street to Portobello, Temple Bar to Grafton Street. It is a unique part of the city that is steeped in history and is home to many businesses and local communities. It is a pleasure to serve the people living there who elected me as their representative. In my capacity as deputy lord mayor, I am looking forward to continue working hard for the people of Southeast Inner City along with the citizens living throughout Dublin city.”

“There is no doubt that there are tough times ahead and tough decisions will have to be made for the city over the next year but I believe that we as a council will overcome these difficult times. The decisions that we make today will have an impact on the next generation of people growing up in Dublin; therefore, we need to ensure that Dublin is a vibrant, thriving, sustainable city, one that people can live, work and raise their families in.”

Once again thank you for the support, I’m looking forward to working with this council, the Lord Mayor and the City Council officials over the next year.
