Previously Mayor of South Dublin County Council 2008/09 Marie was elected to the Council in 2004 and again in 2009 in the Tallaght South Ward, Marie lives in Mountain View, Tallaght with her husband and two young children. Tallaght South covers the wider Firhouse, West Tallaght, Saggart, Brittas and Rathcoole areas. The Labour Party is the largest political grouping on South Dublin County Council holding 9 seats and Marie contested the June '09 local elections in the Tallaght South ward with colleague and former Mayor Cllr Eamonn Maloney who was also re-elected.

In addition to her normal Council duties Marie previously held for four years prior to being elected Mayor in 2008, the Chair of the Housing SPC on South Dublin County Council, she has since moved to the position of Chair of the Arts, Culture and Gaeilge SPC and is a member of the Corporate Policy Group of six Councillors and senior Council management since elected in 2004. She has also been a member of the Environment SPC, the Joint Policing Committee and Local Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee and is the Councillor representative on the West Tallaght RAPID AIT.
