Cllr Mary Freehill Dublin : Dublin Bay South : Rathmines/Pembroke4964777
Cllr Mary Freehill, Labour Councillor on Dublin City Council represents Rathmines, Rathgar, Terenure, Harold's Cross, Ranelagh, Milltown, Donnybrook Ballsbridge and Sandymount.
Mary Freehill entered politics in order to help improve the life style choices of people.
As Lord Mayor of Dublin City, she awarded the Freedom of the City to Nobel Peace Prize winner and Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and also to U2.
Over the years she challenged the Government on the attempted derogation of equal pay and tirelessly campaigned for Family Law Reform. She served as Secretary of Contraception Action Programme (CAP/) in the 70's. She maintained a devoted commitment to the community as Chairperson of The Rathmines, Ranelagh and Harold's Cross Drugs Awareness group that was formed mid 90's to improve communication between residents and Gardai regarding drug abuse locally. The group now gives attention to the issue of underage drinking, working with schools to improve awareness and getting co-operation from publicans and Gardai and work with Youth workers to provide alternative activities for youths who are at risk in the area. More recently Mary campaigned to reform the private rented sector for tenants.
Always interested in the provision of public facilities for cultural, sporting and recreational purposes, Mary got to work with other committed residents and formed /Rathmines Initiative/. One of the major achievements stemming from this is the redevelopment on the Swimming Pool site on Rathmines Rd with construction of a new swimming pool, sports hall, a public plaza and private and social housing completed
Mary has played a very active role on the Planning & Development Strategic Planning Committee and lead the case for the use of more easily understood language in the current Review of the Development Plan process. She has always fought for proper spatial planning practices for the city.
