Originally from Donegal, Councillor Michael Conaghan lives in Ballyfermot with his wife Marian and two children. He has been a member of the Labour Party since 1990 and was elected to Dublin City Council in 1991 to represent the Ballyfermot ward. He had been the chairman of the City of Dublin VEC for many years. He was elected Lord Mayor of Dublin at the City Council meeting on the 21st June 2004. He was Dublin's 375th Lord Mayor from June 2004-June 2005.
Michael is a teacher by profession and is the assistant principal of Inchicore College of Further Education. He is a passionate supporter of issues relating to the arts, heritage and culture.
During his term in office as Mayor, Councillor Conaghan paid particular attention to community policing and sought to establish a specific council committee to deal with issues relating to social justice and equality.
